    La Plata Electric to help businesses/electric contractors understand options/benefits

     

    DURANGO, Colo. – As part of its Free Information Series designed to help members “save their energy,” La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) will host “Lunch & Lights,” Thursday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the cooperative’s multi-purpose room, 45 Stewart St. (Bodo Industrial Park).

    “Electricians, lighting designers, businesses and the interested general public are invited to attend this free educational workshop,” said Ray Pierotti, LPEA project specialist. “It will be a working lunch designed to bring people up-to-date on technology and help further an understanding of energy efficient lighting – plus provide an update of the rebates available to commercial operations that ‘change out’ their overhead fluorescents, refrigeration case and street or parking lot lights.”

    According to Pierotti, the overhead lighting in most commercial operations is T-12 fluorescents, which, beginning in 2012, will no longer be manufactured, thus requiring a shift to the smaller T-5 and T-8 bulbs. The T-5 and T-8 bulbs operate with electronic ballasts as opposed to a magnetic ballast and are 27 to 35 percent more energy efficient than T-12s. Businesses can receive a rebate of $250 per each kilowatt of lighting load reduced at the facility, up to a $20,000 total.

    Additionally, those businesses with refrigerated cases, such as grocery and convenience stores or delis, can receive up to $3,000 in rebates when installing LED case lighting. Those installing LED and induction technology street and parking lot lights are eligible for up to $20,000 in rebates.

    Scheduled to explain the rebate opportunities and requirements at “Lunch & Lights” is Keith Emerson, coordinator of energy marketing/energy services programs for Tri-State Generation and Transmission, the entity providing the rebate funding. Also scheduled is Kathy Wilson of Phillips Lighting, who will discuss the new Department of Energy lighting legislation and current and future lighting technology. Additionally, local business owners who have already “changed out” their lighting will be on hand to talk about their experiences and results.

    “We hope to help those attending better understand the actual cost of lighting in their businesses,” said Pierotti. “Lighting is a tremendous expense, and reducing the amount of electricity consumed by installing energy efficient bulbs is something that will benefit a business’ bottom line for years to come.”
