Battery Energy Storage System Rebates: RESIDENTIAL + COMMERCIAL

Installing a battery energy storage system whether paired with a new or existing solar PV system or as a standalone backup, offers several potential benefits. It can help:

  • Strengthen the grid
  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reduce electricity costs for both members and the cooperative
  • Ensure backup power during outages

To promote the adoption of battery energy storage systems, LPEA is offering rebates to members who use their systems in ways that benefit the cooperative. Fortunately, the operating modes and schedules that save the cooperative money are the same ones that will save system owners money. It’s a win-win!

Battery System Rebates

*To qualify for the bonus rebate, the battery system must be scheduled to delay the start of charging for the battery until noon during the months of April, May, September, and October. Delaying charging until noon in spring and fall months can help increase daytime electricity demand and potentially allow for more new solar PV systems in areas of LPEA’s grid that are currently facing limits because all the daytime electricity demand is being met by local generation.
Battery System Size

Scheduled to Minimize
Peak Demand between 4-9pm

*Bonus Rebate if in Interconnection Limited Zone (Orange or Red Areas)
10-19.9 kWh  $1000  $500
≥ 20kWh

$2000

$1000

In addition to LPEA’s rebates there are State and/or Federal tax credits available for battery energy storage systems.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this rebate:

  • The battery system must have gone through LPEA’s interconnection process and have received a Permission to Operate certificate from LPEA.
  • The battery/power control system must be in the Eligible Systems & Operating Modes table below and programmed to operate in the specified operating mode.

Eligible Systems and Operating Modes

Battery/ Power Control System Manufacturer  Operating Mode
Emporia  Time of Use (TOU)
Enphase  Savings
Franklin WH  Load-Shifting
LG  TOU
Sol-Ark  Time of Use + Limited Power to Home or Limited Power to Load + Grid Sell
Tesla  Time-Based
  • The battery system must operate on a schedule designed to minimize demand from the grid between 4pm-9pm. Each manufacturer’s interface is slightly different, but this can generally be accomplished by creating a utility rate schedule with an artificially high rate between 4pm-9pm.
Reach out to LPEA at communitypower@lpea.coop or your installer for help with this.
  • The battery system must have a minimum state-of-charge limit of 30% or lower.
  • The member must agree to provide information about their experience with this program and their battery system’s performance to LPEA when requested so that LPEA can evaluate the value and effectiveness of this rebate program.
  • The member must work with an installer who agrees to provide LPEA with data about the battery system’s performance when requested.
Confirm with your installer or reach out to communitypower@lpea.coop to see if they are eligible.
  • To earn the Bonus Rebate for delaying charging until noon in the months of April, May, September, and October the member must:
    • Be in an Interconnection Limited Zone (Orange or Red Areas) at the time of the application.
    • Submit a picture of the schedule that would delay start of battery charging until noon.
    • Maintain the delayed charging schedule for the months of April, May, September, and October for the life of their system or until they are informed by LPEA that it is no longer needed.
    • Members may revert to a schedule that charges as soon as possible in all other months. For simplicity, members can consider using a Delayed Charging schedule for April through October and a Minimize-Peak-Demand schedule from November to March.

Application Instructions and Requirements

Complete the form below. You will also need to upload the following:

  • Permission to Operate from interconnection process.
  • Screenshots of:
    • Battery operating mode.
    • Battery schedule.
    • State-of-charge (depth-of-discharge) limit.
    • Verification of Weather Backup mode setting, if applicable.
    • Delayed charging schedule if applying for the bonus rebate.
  • IRS W-9 form completed by the member/rebate recipient. A W-9 is kept on file by LPEA as proof of the allocation of funds. Any tax liability is the responsibility of the rebate recipient.

Submit applications within 90 days of completed installation. *Members in Interconnection Limited Zones may apply for the Bonus Rebate at any time (even if the system was installed prior to 2025), but are only eligible for the base rebate within 90 days of completed installation

TIP: If you are on a TOU rate you may want to modify your battery schedule to avoid using power from the grid between 6-9am and 9-10pm in addition to the required window of 4-9pm.
