A person looks at their phone

We want to let our members know of reports of scams related to electricity bills targeting our members. Please be on high alert for any suspicious calls, emails, or visitors claiming to be from La Plata Electric Association.

The most common scam involves imposters calling or showing up at your home, aggressively demanding immediate payment for allegedly past-due amounts on your account. In addition, be advised that scammers typically insist you pay via unconventional methods like pre-paid debit cards, cryptocurrencies, or third-party money transfer apps.

Please remember that LPEA will never:

  • Show up at your home or business to demand payment.
  • Ask you to pay with pre-paid debit cards, cryptocurrencies, or money transfer apps.
  • Use aggressive/threatening tactics to collect payment.

If you receive a suspicious call, visit, or email regarding your electricity account, do not provide any personal or financial information. Hang up or walk away and contact LPEA directly at 970-247-5786 to verify your account status.

We also ask that you report any suspicious calls or activity so we can help all our members stay informed. Scammers are persistent and constantly change their tactics, so stay vigilant. Please email csr@lpea.coop to report suspicious activity.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue, and don't hesitate to contact us with any other questions or concerns regarding scams.
