LPEA is inviting high school juniors living in our service territory, which includes La Plata and Archuleta Counties, to participate in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour scheduled for June 17-23, 2024. This all-expense-paid week in Washington, DC, aims to empower the leaders of tomorrow by offering an opportunity to shine, make friends, learn, and lead in the electric rural cooperative world.
The Youth Tour, a tradition since the 1950s, allows students to engage with student leaders, uncover the history behind cooperatives, connect with state representatives, and explore iconic spots such as the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Cemetery. Additionally, participants will enjoy a cruise on the Potomac River, see a play, and dine at local restaurants.
"Attending the Youth Tour was an eye-opener for me, and it was such a fantastic experience," said Pagosa Springs High School participant Michelle Carrillo. "It opened my eyes to the issues that cooperatives face daily, and I realized that as a member of a co-op, I need to be involved."
Applications for the 2024 Youth Tour are now open and must be submitted by January 1 2024. A committee will review the applications and select one student delegate from Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, and Ignacio. The four winners will be notified in February.
