An extraordinary story of community support and cooperation unfolds in the heart of La Plata and Archuleta counties, thanks to the LPEA Electric Round Up Foundation. Established with a vision to empower and uplift, the LPEA Round Up Foundation stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating the profound impact of collective action.

A Testament to Generosity

At its core, the LPEA Round Up Foundation is fueled by the generosity of LPEA members. In an exemplary display of community spirit, approximately 16,855 members have opted to "round up" their electric bills to the nearest dollar, accumulating a remarkable $29,800 in the first quarter of 2024 alone. This simple yet powerful gesture signifies more than just a donation; it represents a shared commitment to nurturing and supporting the community's well-being.

Empowering Non-Profits and Individuals

The foundation's unique approach has enabled it to support a diverse array of initiatives. In the early months of 2024, the foundation approved 11 grants totaling $40,558 to various local non-profits. These organizations play crucial roles in enhancing the cultural, environmental, and social landscape of the community. Here is who has benefited from our member’s generosity:

  • A Safe Place in Pagosa, Inc
  • Bear Smart Durango
  • Dancing Spirit Center for the Arts
  • Pagosa Springs Initiative - The Studios
  • Pine River Shares Southwest Housing Providers Socorro
  • Southwest Organization for Sustainability (SOS)

Furthermore, the foundation's commitment extends beyond organizational support to address individual and emergency needs. With allocations to the Community Emergency Assistance Coalition and the Pagosa Outreach Connection, the foundation ensures that families and individuals facing crises are not left behind.

Education as a Pillar of Community Development

Recognizing the transformative power of education, the LPEA Round Up Foundation also dedicates significant resources to educational grants. With an annual allocation of $60,000 from LPEA unclaimed capital credits, the foundation has supported the following institutions so far in 2024:

  • 20 Moons Dance Theater
  • Archuleta County Education Center
  • Durango Film Institute
  • The Arc of Southwest Colorado

The Cooperative Principle: Concern for Community

The foundation's activities vividly embody the cooperative principle of concern for the community. By rallying its members to contribute, the LPEA Round Up Foundation not only aids immediate needs but also invests in the region's long-term resilience and prosperity. This model of mutual aid and cooperation serves as a powerful example for others, demonstrating how collective efforts can create a significant impact.

Joining Hands for a Brighter Future

The LPEA Round Up Foundation's work is a testament to the strength found in unity. It reminds us that when individuals come together with a shared vision of support and kindness, the possibilities are boundless. For those inspired to contribute, the foundation offers an easy path to participation. With an average annual contribution of just $6.00 from rounding up electric bills, every LPEA member has the opportunity to be a part of this remarkable journey of giving.

As we reflect on the foundation's accomplishments and its vision for the future, it becomes clear that the spirit of community and cooperation is not just alive but thriving. Through its commitment to support, educate, and uplift, the LPEA Round Up Foundation continues to weave a stronger, more compassionate fabric for our area, one rounded-up bill at a time.
