Take a pause when electricity demand is at its peak.

We're launching our Lighten the Load (LTL) program to increase awareness about peak power and the impact each member can have in helping decrease strain on our grid.

Our community uses the most collective power between 4 PM and 9 PM, which can cause long-term added stress to our system and result in the need to pull power from quick, less-clean energy resources.

What if we could make a shift and:

✔️Alleviate strain on the grid
✔️Reduce reliance on those quick, less clean energy resources
✔️Increase community-wide energy efficiency
✔️Earn bill credits for the energy you save

Lighten the Load rewards members for conserving electricity during specified periods when we forecast that the need for electricity will be higher than usual.

If you're part of the Lighten the Load Program, we'll let you know when a Peak Event is coming, and you can help us keep usage down. PLUS! You'll save on your bill by reducing usage during those peak hours, AND we'll give you credit on your account for the energy you save.

Enrollment is voluntary, and there is no cost or risk to participate.

Here's How it Works

  • Fill out the simple enrollment form below to be added to our Lighten the Load participant list.
  • If you have trouble with this enrollment, please call 970-247-5786 and one of our Member Service Representatives can help you.
  • Once you’ve enrolled in the program, you will receive an alert via email or text message informing you about an upcoming time when you can save. Alerts are typically sent a day in advance.
  • These events will usually be two to three-hour blocks on weekdays between the hours of 4 PM and 9 PM
  • During the time period specified in the alert, reduce your electric usage however you’d like.
  • A great place to start is by changing some power habits, like delaying the use of your dishwasher, washer or dryer, or adjusting your thermostat.
  • Check out this resource for more ways to save energy.
  • We calculate a baseline from your electric usage during recent similar days.
  • If you reduce your energy use during the specified timeframe compared to your baseline, you will get rewarded with a bill credit on your next bill: ____ per kWH reduced compared to your baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Lighten the Load alerts can be issued in any month of the year. The number of times in a month varies. In some months we might send several alerts, while in others there may be none.

  • There could be alerts called on back-to-back days.

  • Typically, these periods will occur on weekdays (but weekends and holidays are possible, too), between the hours of 4 PM and 9 PM

  • We anticipate no more than ____ Lighten the Load events to be issued in a calendar year; however, depending on weather and systemwide electricity use, that number could vary.

Typically, we will send members a Lighten the Load alert the day before the specified timeframe when you can save. Depending on how you set up your notifications in SmartHub, you'll either receive an alert via email, text message, or both.

  • Nothing! There is no penalty if you can’t reduce your electricity use during the timeframe called out in the alert.

  • While consistent participation is the most helpful to us and to you, it’s entirely up to you when you participate.

  • Your price for electricity will not change as a result of participating in the program.

  • Enrolling in the program is just the first step. You ALSO need to log in to your SmartHub account and update your notification preferences in order to receive the alerts.

  • Instructions are included at the end of this document

  • If you've signed up for notifications and have not yet received an alert, it is likely that we haven't had a Lighten the Load event yet.

  • You may contact our member services team at msr@lpea.coop or 907-247-5786 if you have further questions.

  • Our power supply analysts created an algorithm that determines your expected electricity usage at the time of predicted high demand (based on historical usage patterns).

  • This algorithm gives us a baseline value, which represents an estimate of what you would have used in each hour during that time.

  • If you reduce you electricity use below that expected baseline, you will earn credit.

  • For weekdays - the baseline is calculated by taking the average of the previous ten days during the defined event hours.

  • On weekends - th baseline is the average of the previous two weekend days during the defined event hours.

  • We will calculate a baseline from your electric usage during recent similar days.

  • During a Lighten the Load event, you can earn up to $X.XX for each Kilowatt-hour (kWh) you reduce your usage compared to that baseline.

  • In a calendar year, we anticipate no more than __ total LTL hours.

  • No. This program has nothing to do with power outages.

  • The purpose of the program is to help us reduce our Co-op’s energy usage as a whole and therefore reduce the amount of energy that is purchased during high-usage hours.
